FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY DO PEOPLE
SEEK THERAPY?
People come into therapy for many reasons. Some need to respond to unexpected changes in their life, while others seek self-exploration and personal growth. When coping skills are overwhelmed by guilt, doubt, anxiety, or despair, therapy can help. Therapy can provide support, problemsolving skills, and enhanced coping for issues such as depression, anxiety, lack of confidence, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues, bereavement, spiritual conflicts, stress management, body image issues, and creative blochs. People seeking psycho-therapy are willing to take responsibility for their actions, work towards selfchange and create greater awareness in their lives.
WHAT BENEFITS CAN I EXPECT FROM WORKING WITH A THERAPIST?
A number of benefits are available from participating in psychotherapy. Often it is helpful just to know that someone understands. Theraphy can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. Many people find therapy to be a tremendous asset to managing personal growth, inter-personal relationships, family concerns, and the hassles of daily life. The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on hew well you use the process and put into practice what you learn.
IF I CALL FOR HELP, DOES IT MEAN THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME?
Going to therapy is, in fact, an indication of emotional maturity, an indication that a person can accept that he or she needs the help of guidance of another and is willing to do what is necessary to take care of himself /herself. The reality is that the majority of people in therapy are ordinary, everyday people dealing with everyday problems. Adjusting to major life changes, experiencing grief, processing anger, improving relationships, working on self-esteem, and addressing core beliefs about one´s body image are all examples of common issues wich bring people to therapy.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PSYCHIATRIST,
PSYCHOLOGIST AND LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER?
All of the above practitioners provide mental health counseling and psychotherapy; the differences lie only in the type and length of training and whether they can prescribe medications. A Psychiatric is a Medical Doctor, they are qualified to order diagnostic laboratory tests and to prescribe medications, evaluate and treat psychological and interpersonal problems. Clinical Psychologists have graduate and doctorate degrees with special training in mental health assessment. Clinical Social Workers have obtained a Master of Social Work degree and often seen as patient advocate as they can help people´navigate the system´. LCSW are not able to prescribe medication for treatment.
